Emiko Suo
Emiko Suo was born in 1966 in Tokyo, Japan, where she lives and works. She holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in arts, both in metalwork, from Tokyo University of Arts. Her relationship with jewelry predates his academic studies: she grew up going to her father’s studio, a craftsman of precious stones and metals. And, throughout her career’s development, she had as one of her mentors Yasuki Hiramatsu (1926–2012), professor and pioneer of modern Japanese jewelry.
The artist understands her pieces as elements in constant change, only finished when someone wears them. They can also change according to one’s state of mind or the wearer’s style. Finding diverse possibilities of expression from her creations is one of the aspects that interests her the most.

Japanese Body Adornment: Embellishment, Functionality, and Refinement
According to each country’s culture and historical period, there are different types of adornment, with different uses, applications, and symbolisms.
When we observe the origin of body ornaments in Japanese history, we see the production of Gyoku (玉 – gem) jewelry, called Magatama, which were shaped like a comma. There are registers of these pieces from the Jomon Era (10,500 B.C.–300 B.C.) until the 6th century, as can be confirmed by the bracelets and necklaces found in the tombs of the Kofun Era (250 A.D. –538 A.D.). In this last phase, such pieces, initially used as objects of protection, became symbols of power and ritualistic instruments.
In later periods, curiously, body adornment disappeared in Japanese history, something rare among Asian countries. This absence is associated, by some, with the peculiarity of Japanese aesthetics—the preference for something suggestive, discreet, latent, even invisible, instead of cultivating an apparent beauty. Others say that the appeal of the kimono, a garment similar to an artistic canvas, with its refined dyeing and embroidery technique, dispensed with any elements other than the obi (sash). Some notes also relate this disappearance to the fact that Japan does not have precious stones in abundance, except for coral and pearls.
Thus, one can understand a certain tendency of the Japanese to traditionally choose stones without much gleam. Preferring opaque to transparent, fog to brightness, the Japanese character dialogues with the famous book In Praise of Shadows, by Jun’ichirō Tanizaki, which emphasizes shade over light, as well as with the wabi-sabi aesthetic, which emphasizes the simple, the rustic, and the appreciation of the temporal vestige. The crown of the Buddhist statue at the Tōdaiji temple, from the 8th century, one of the oldest in Japan, shows opaque stones such as pearls, corals, and jades. The pearl has been appreciated by the Japanese since ancient times, and was an element offered as a gift to Chinese emperors.
Although the Japanese people did not use body adornments between the 7th century and the middle of the 19th century, ornamental techniques did not cease to be developed, and were employed in Buddhist art objects, tea ceremony objects, combs of noble ladies, and samurai’s kabuto (helmets). They were also applied to typical Japanese ornaments of the Edo Era (1603–1868) such as netsuke, inrō, katana, and kanzashi, which combined utilitarian function with beauty. Many of them were exclusively male. Netsuke 根付—whose ideograms mean to root and to hang—were tiny sculptures, usually carved from ivory, animal bones and horns, or metals, which, hung from the obi (kimono sash) by a rope, serve to hold the inrō. This word, in Japanese writing 印籠, literally means stamp basket, because of its origin associated with the piece used for holding stamps. Later, tobacco and medicine were carried in these accessories by the samurai. The katana sword features a guard between the blade and the handle called a tsuba, which is often made of metal with designs, some with gold inlay. Female hair adornments worn by women, such as hairpins, buckles, and hair clips, are called kanzashi.
It can be seen, therefore, that all these body adornments used to satisfy not only the ornamental quality, but simultaneously the functional one. The precision, delicacy, care with details, and refined execution can be observed in these tiny works of art, many of them in lacquer, which ennobles Japanese artifacts. Some of them are made of makie, a lacquer work with the application of metal powder, such as gold and silver, which gives them refinement. Not by chance, these objects—netsuke, inrō, and tsuba, mainly—are part of the collections of renowned international museums.
In Japan today, for body adornments as they are understood in the West, we have the words Hōseki (宝石), a combination of two ideograms (treasure and stone), and Jueri (ジュエリー), coming from the English word “jewelry,” both synonyms for jewelry. Such terms, however, began to be employed only after the Meiji Era (1868–1912).
The first Western-style jewelry appeared in the 1920s, when the Japanese started producing it, but the wars prevented the development of this field. Only after the Second World War, with the accelerated economic progress, did Japanese society return to the personal adornments that were worn in the Jomon era, with the difference that they are no longer symbols of protection, but of fashion, style, representation of personality, taste, and often a demonstration of power. Traditionally, the Japanese prefer rings and necklaces to bracelets and earrings—since few women have their ears pierced. Rings as a symbol of marriage commitment, a western influence, have a history of less than 100 years, with platinum preferred to gold.
Currently, jewelry designers are combining traditional elements and aesthetics with contemporary design in an interesting dialog. Many artists bring to contemporary times the traditional techniques of lacquering, washi paper, rattan, fabric, and the theme of nature so dear to Japanese art, emphasizing that human being and nature make up a unity, distinct from the more common dual perspective more recurrently observed in the West. In the small works of these artists, some characteristics of the Japanese tradition are preserved, such as the delicacy and simplicity allied to the appreciation of detail and the technical refinement of Japanese craftsmen.

Mariko Kusumoto
Mariko Kusumoto was born in 1967 in Kumamoto, Japan, and now lives and works in Massachusetts, USA. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Painting and Printmaking from Musashino Art College in Tokyo, and her master’s degree in Printmaking from the Academy of Art University, in San Francisco, California.
The artist uses fabric to construct forms of elegant simplicity and evocative imagery, and strives to bring out each material’s inherent characteristics and beauty. Using a proprietary heat-setting technique, she gives the fabric a new identity through reshaping it into three-dimensional forms, usually inspired by nature, marine life, and the cells of the human body, as well as playful figures that recall a child’s universe, like wooden horses or colorful balls.

Miki Asai
Miki Asai was born in 1988 in Aichi, Japan, where she lives and works. She holds a degree in Interior Design from the Musashino Art University in Tokyo, Japan, and in Goldsmithing and Jewelry from the Glasgow School of Art, Scotland, from which she graduated with honors.
Asai’s jewelry is inspired by immaterial aspects—phenomena such as light and shadow, and the color of the sky, as well as the idea of fugacity, alluding to the constant change of nature. Recently, she started paying special attention to everyday objects, which are precious, but not always taken into consideration. Not coincidentally, her work is based on one of the main concepts of Japanese culture, the wabi-sabi, which evokes the beauty of impermanence, imperfection, transience, and ephemerality.

Naho Okamoto
Naho Okamoto was born in 1981 in Tokyo, Japan. She currently lives in Bern and works between the Swiss capital and her home country. She holds a degree in Interior Design from the Kuwasawa Design School in Tokyo and a post-graduate degree from the Bern Academy of the Arts, Switzerland.
Okamoto grew up surrounded by art and design. Her father, an architect and painter, influenced her in that direction. At university, she started to become interested in producing pieces in smaller scale, which could be related to the body. Thus, she started creating jewelry. In 2006, she founded the SIRI SIRI brand, whose unique jewelry creations are made from ordinary materials, combining traditional techniques with a bold and contemporary design. To achieve this, she works with Japanese artisans, uses natural materials of sustainable origin, and opts for a production that is hand-made to order, minimizing environmental impact.

Nahoko Fujimoto
Nahoko Fujimoto was born in 1959 in Osaka, Japan, and graduated from the Kansai Women’s Art College. Her production relates to childhood memories, and her creations refer to that time by using materials and shapes that can awaken good feelings or generate recognition in the wearer.
The Tanabata Matsuri, or Star Festival, is one of her main references. The strips of colored paper used to write wishes and requests (tanzaku), as well as the streamers called fukinagashi, inspire the artist in her work with paper: she uses magnets and metallic structures to create pieces that, when opened, reveal a singularly delicate volume in folded paper.

Singular Pairs
Accessories are non-essential items. Extras. Secondary. Maybe even superfluous.
But on many fronts, such as fashion, accessories are fundamental. According to typical fashion jargon, they can completely change a look, go from day to night, and transform what is basic into something sophisticated.
The conscious act of adorning oneself has existed for thousands of years. Bracelets, earrings, necklaces, rings, and many other adornments have been created for this purpose, without the logic of functionality.
Above all, accessories are an important part of building one’s identity. They work as codes of belonging, in which styles are constructed and there is a desire to transmit messages about the personality or state of mind of those who wear them. They are also tools in the manifestation of individuality.
In this exhibition, accessories are the focus, the top stars of our attention.
The jewelry presented here, 15 from each designer, can be one-of-a-kind pieces or mass-produced. They were designed by five women from different generations, with distinct personal and professional backgrounds, as well as particular choices of materials and techniques.
Nahoko Fujimoto, Emiko Suo, Mariko Kusumoto, Miki Asai, and Naho Okamoto use metal, fabric, glass, bamboo, rattan, mother-of-pearl, shell, paper, and eggshells in their creations. Their inspirations can come from elements of nature, the materials’ specificity, art exhibitions, children’s games, elements of their everyday life, and dreams.
