“Gold Rush” – Visualization + Sonification of OpenSea activity
2021
Video
Concept, sound design, and technical direction: Daito Manabe
Visual design and programming: Futa Kera
System programming and server-side design: 2bit
Server-side programming: Kosaku Namikawa
Special thanks to Mai Fujimoto (KIZUNA) and Yu Ayato (KIZUNA)
On March 11th, 2021, the art market registered a new record: the sale of a fully digital work with NFT (an acronym for non-fungible token) and guarantee of authenticity for U$69,346,250.00, which was also paid for largely in cryptocurrency.
The commercialization of EVERYDAYS: THE FIRST 5000 DAYS, by American artist Beeple, although recent, was characterized as a landmark event not only for the arts. For this reason, Daito Manabe conducted an analysis of image data traded on OpenSea—in a simplified way, a trading platform for NFTs—during the day on which this work was auctioned, recording the large flow of transactions.
For this, he used deep learning techniques* and Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs)** to extract aspects and characteristics of the cryptoart sold in that same period. Daito Manabe’s analysis followed some patterns: chronology, type, hits per minute, and colors present in the images that were being sold.
The video shown here is a record of the organization and grouping of the analyzed works under certain criteria, arranging them on a two-dimensional plane and then rearranging them in three-dimensional form. This work not only draws attention to a subject as current as NFTs, cryptocurrencies, and blockchains, but gives visibility to the dynamism of virtual relations and their many possibilities.
* Deep learning is one of the foundations of Artificial Intelligence (AI). It brings together applications that allow devices to recognize speech, detect images and objects, describe content, etc. These technologies are like those used in autonomous driving, surveillance cameras, online shopping product search tools, among others that require high recognition accuracy.
** Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are deep learning algorithms used mainly for image recognition and video processing.

Sensing Streams 2022 – invisible, inaudible

Installation
Design: Ryuichi Sakamoto and Daito Manabe
Visual programming: Daito Manabe (Rhizomatiks)
Software development: Yuta Asai (Rhizomatiks)
Hardware development: Katsuhiko Harada (Rhizomatiks)

Production: Takao Inoue (Rhizomatiks)
The title of this work, Sensing Streams, already suggests what this is about and how it works. It is an installation in which electromagnetic waves are detected and captured, making visible and audible this great flow that surrounds us, but that is imperceptible to human eyes and ears.
An antenna is installed and starts to detect and collect electromagnetic waves that are all the time being emitted by cell phones, radios, and Bluetooth devices, among many others. These waves, responsible for carrying various types of data, are captured, and their frequency is transformed into sound and image by a software developed by the Rhizomatiks team. On a large LED screen and from speakers, the public can see and hear this flow in high definition. However, each person is also able to change the frequency and length of the wave by moving the control on the totem, which automatically changes the image on the screen and the sound emitted. Thus, one realizes the variety and multiplicity of waves in real time.
First developed in 2014 and being updated since then, this work is a collaboration between Rhizomatiks founder Daito Manabe—who among many fronts is dedicated to experimenting with data technologies and visualizing this information—and musician Ryuichi Sakamoto, who conducts research on hearing and transforming data into sound. Understanding that nowadays electromagnetic waves have become an essential part of everyday infrastructure, the artists take this work as an opportunity to make the public aware of a phenomenon that usually goes unnoticed, although we are active agents of this process, with our smartphones and other devices.

optical walls
2022
Installation
Technical cooperation: Mitsui Chemicals Inc.
The dark room welcomes those who enter it with a new architectural proposal: walls made of light that remain in movement, crossing each other, sometimes joining, and sometimes moving away. These rectangles are in constant displacement and allow the audience to be transported to a new place, enveloped by an ethereal structure.
This immersive experience is made possible by a complex interaction between multiple lighting units. The installation presents a set of three lenses developed especially for this work, whose diffusion coefficient—the amount of oxygen that passes through the area of the lens—is extremely low, allowing light to concentrate in parallel beams. Its shape, a toric ring form, was also designed so that the incidence of light would generate linear bands. The smoke that hangs permanently in space is responsible for giving volume to these beams, revealing large geometric shapes made essentially of light and resembling walls. As the LED lights that make up the space rotate on two different axes, we see countless luminous transformations take place.
In optical walls, Yoichi Sakamoto, a member of Rhizomatiks and creator of this work, wishes to bring to light discussions about principles such as the natural phenomena that surround us—the seasons, for example, which exist because of the Earth’s inclination towards the sun—which, being essential to the maintenance of life or because we are used to them, seem easy to understand, even though they are very complex.
Essentially, the installation consists of only a handful of rotating light sources that explore the role of diffusion on flat surfaces. However, using industrially manufactured materials and resources, the installation creates a new ambiance, demonstrating everything from phenomenological theories to dazzling kaleidoscopic effects.

Created in 2006, Rhizomatiks is a creative collective that explores possibilities in art, media, and technology with an interest in furthering research and relationships between the human being and technologies. Based in Tokyo, the group was founded by Daito Manabe—artist, programmer, and DJ—and relies on a team composed of artists and programmers, but also engineers, designers, and architects, among others.
The versatility of the professionals who work at Rhizomatiks is reflected in its productions, experimental projects that relate visual arts, design, and architecture with elements from data science, advertising, and entertainment.
Moving between the real and online worlds through so many fields of knowledge, the members of the collective are involved in almost all stages of a project, from planning and creative conception to software and hardware development and operations, which allows for a more complete integration, clearly perceived in the final result.
With over 15 years in the business, Rhizomatiks had its first solo exhibition and retrospective in 2021, rhizomatiks_multiplex, which took place at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo (MOT), in Japan. Among their creations are participation in the closing ceremony of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, collaborations with Japanese music groups ELEVENPLAY and Perfume, and the development of a series of devices for various technological solutions.

htmlText_5DD1748E_4BC4_A4B4_41C8_29E75CF9D5F6.html = What cannot be seen
In a very brief way, Deleuze’s (France, 1925-1995) and Guattari’s (France, 1930-1992) concept of “rhizome” uses botany as a source of inspiration to indicate relationships, research, and thinking from a multiple perspective, which evolves without a definite beginning or end, but as a series of unfoldings to many sides that extend into many others in a comprehensive and infinite network, like a rhizome. From this philosophical concept comes the name of the Japanese group created in 2006 by multimedia artist Daito Manabe, Rhizomatiks.
Blurring boundaries between distinct fields, the group works very freely. It is not hostage to labels or pre-established categories. Its creations value the collaborative process.
Rhizomatiks transforms, subverts, challenges, and exposes aspects of our daily lives in experimental projects, approaching a series of phenomena that surround us and creating new forms of expression.
According to Manabe, their works aren’t after the “wow effect,” but an intellectual and emotional engagement by the public.
The group works across several disciplines such as visual arts, dance, music, and theater, in collaboration with a wide range of partners, and associates technological tools on these fronts. They often make use of already existing technologies while proposing something new.
Although the group is well known in Japan and on the international scene for its diverse performances, the exhibition What cannot be seen is the first in Latin America dedicated to showing a set of its works. But Rhizomatiks is already known to the Brazilian public for having created the closing performance of the Rio Olympics in 2016.
The four works selected and presented here address invisible elements in one way or another, working with electromagnetic waves, creating optical barriers to replace physical ones, showing the universe of NFTs (non-fungible tokens) and the backstage of the group’s activities in these years developing apparatuses and works of all kinds.
Sensing streams, cryptography, sound, electric currents, data, walls that by definition are physical limits, but here suggest a subversion of space as they are built by lights… The boundaries between art, technology and human being converge.
Throughout the exhibition development process, we realized once again the importance of personal relationships and physical presence. The challenges of assembling without the presence of its creators are countless. Technology is certainly not self-sufficient.
Despite constantly working in this duality of the real world and the technological world, the most important factor behind it all, the source and the final destination of the creations, the human being, stands out.
