Disparities between city and countryside, falling birth rates, aging populations, and environmental imbalances are current symptoms of capitalism and productivism. Over the last decade, several experiments that rethink the relationship between nature, the environment, and people's daily lives have been gaining prominence, connecting these elements through art and architecture in rural areas of Japan.
Symbiosis: the resistant island presents a 13-year-old project on the small island of Inujima, located in the Seto Inland Sea. The project is a partnership of the Benesse Art Site Naoshima and the island's residents with architects, artists, and curators.
Symbiosis is a term from ecology that refers to the reciprocal association of two or more dissimilar organisms, which allows them to live in a mutually beneficial relationship. The exhibition intends to convey to the world the aesthetics and practice of symbiosis. Catalyzed by art, architecture, and design and landscape projects based on models of organic mutual assistance, symbiosis connects the environment, people's lives, gastronomy, and history. The cooperation between the parties, thus, showcases the region’s full potential.
Inujima has an area of 0.54 km2 and a perimeter of 3.6 km. It takes only one hour on foot to walk around the island. The village comprises approximately 30 houses and its residents are over 70. Curator Yuko Hasegawa invited architect Kazuyo Sejima to develop several projects with architects and artists in collaboration with the Foundation and the island's residents.
In addition to the five pavilions (exhibition galleries), there are outdoor exhibitions that change slightly every 3 years. The initiatives have expanded over the last 4 years: the Landscape Project started with the construction of a botanical garden and a greenhouse. To serve those staying on the island, a bar has been created, and activities, such as workshops and seminars, are offered. Despite the difficulty in increasing the number of residents, the goal is to create an ecosystem that also contemplates people's daily lives, thus making Inujima a platform for art and culture.
The centerpiece of the exhibition is the road that circles the island, highlighting the art, the pavilions, and other projects encountered along the way. It is structured as a large installation so that visitors can get an overview of the connections between the different spaces. The road also offers visitors an opportunity to enjoy different content, such as models of art projects, videos about Inujima, and interviews with residents about their daily lives. All of this is aimed at providing visitors a chance to get to know the island better and to show that some people also call it home. Just like our designs for the future—where we are heading—this exhibition paints the world a picture of what is possible through symbiosis.

12. A-Art House
As visitors approach the S-Art House, the A-Art-House also comes into their field of vision. It is surrounded by houses and is shaped like a ring. Thus, visitors can appreciate the work of art that surrounds them and at the same time experience being enveloped by the village itself. The intention was to make visitors understand that the island itself is an art museum, and that the works on display were designed to be integral parts of its territory.

13. C-Art House
This older building was the most impressive on the island, and its majestic design has been kept, albeit with some adjustments. To comply with local legislation, instead of using a bracing structure, studies had shown that this building used a system of studs, which was eventually adopted with low beams. Two thick beams were installed in two locations, 70 centimeters off the ground, on the inside of the space.

14. I-Art House
The building was made with materials that were already on the island. It is the only exhibition space with white walls. This is the last gallery on the path through the village and on the way back to the sea. As visitors make their way down a quiet slope and approach the sea, the window diagonally opened allows the exhibited artwork to be appreciated against the landscape background. Visitors can enter the space by going round the garden, which faces the sea.

2. Inujima Life Garden
About 4,500 m2 of land was used to create a botanical garden that features an ancient glass greenhouse as its central structure, reflecting the culture and environment of Inujima. This self-sufficient structure has spaces for everything from food production to energy generation. Here visitors will experience the joy of the changing cycles of nature.

A transparent and narrow gallery was built in the place where a wall used to stand. Initially, the intention was to position the gallery parallel to the street, but during the project’s development phase there was an idea of having greater curvature to help stabilize the acrylic structure of the walls. A pipe underground helps with the cooling system and air circulation in the exhibition room by pushing hot air outside and cooling the air inside.

8. Inujima Stay Kitchen + Dining
This is a proposal that aims to create spaces for accommodation and interaction for those who wish to spend a longer period of time on the island. The project includes two houses for accommodating visitors and a community space where they can interact with the island's residents. The latter includes a kitchen, dining room and bathroom. In addition, the covered area surrounding the internal garden provides a space where people can eat and rest.

9. Stay 01
Currently in Inujima there is a project underway that aims to create lodging where people can stay and interact with local residents by sharing collective spaces. Ryue Nishizawa’s architecture firm is leading the design of two of these spaces. Stay 01 was designed in an old modest residence with a gabled roof. The house was no longer inhabited and was renovated to serve its new purpose.

A-Art House
Kazuyo Sejima & Associates
A gallery made of 30mm-thick acrylic walls, A-Art House is surrounded by houses and is shaped like a ring. Thus, visitors can appreciate the artwork that surrounds them and at the same time feel the experience of being surrounded by the village. The aim was to make visitors understand that the island itself is an art museum and that the works on display are designed to be a part of the space.

F-Art House
Kazuyo Sejima & Associates
The F-Art House is located in front of the rocky mountain that houses a small shrine in honor of the deity of Inunoshima. The site’s existing residence was renovated to create an exhibition space. In doing so, the building’s original materials were preserved wherever possible, limiting new materials to replacing deteriorated parts of the structure. Two new spaces were added that serve as gardens, with earthquake-resistant walls. The finishing was done with new materials, but every effort was made to create a harmony with the older structure. The result is an architecture that integrates the new and the old.

Biota, 2013
Biota, dynamically occupies the gallery space and evokes supernatural beings from Inujima Island. It breathes life into the creatures that have been around since ancient times, as well as the unknown organisms that could emerge in the future. The title refers to an ecological term used for designating the series of living beings - the flora and fauna -that live or lived in a given environment.

Hoppy Bar
Tetsuo Kondo Architects (Architecture)
Kazuyo Sejima & Associates (Furniture)
A small unoccupied house and the vacant lot next to it, located by the main street, were renovated to become a bar. The bar serves drinks based on Hoppy (a beer-flavored almost non-alcoholic beverage). The space was envisioned as a space for relaxed interaction between visitors and residents. The empty house was slightly expanded, and a large block of granite quarried on the very island is part of the structure to protect the building from seismic tremors. Two sides of the building completely open onto the surrounding garden. The aim is to create an architecture where nostalgia and novelty, the modern and the traditional, the natural and the artificial integrate to form something unique. The design of the tables allows them to create different spaces. Depending on the purpose and the number of people, they can be moved, joined or separated.

Resistance and permanence
A small 0.54-km2 island, Inujima was once a prosperous industrial base whose population peaked at 5,000 inhabitants. The end of the manufacturing activities that set the tone of the island’s life led to a radical change in habits, interests, and reality.
The island’s nearly 50 current inhabitants, whose average age is rather high, have lived through these changes and seen Inujima take on a new calling.
Today the island is an example of space reconfiguration, of efforts on coexistence, of the capacity that art and architecture have to propel new possibilities, and with its status raised to that of a tourist destination and an integral part of the important Setouchi Triennale festival.
First, the architect Hiroshi Sambuichi in collaboration with artist Yukinori Yanagi transformed the old factory into the Inujima Seirensho Art Museum, which opened in 2008. Then in 2010, Kazuyo Sejima and Yuko Hasegawa, the organizers of this exhibition, initiated the bold Inujima Art House Project, which foresees the revitalization of the island through careful interventions that are sensitive to the island’s landscape and the local community.
The project transcends the architectural logic of purely constructive practices by focusing on experimental architecture that puts forward a new occupation and a different way of relating to the environment.
The harmonious coexistence of this tiny population with artistic-architectural installations by major names on the international contemporary scene enables a unique sense of awareness and appropriation. And it is a two-way street: artists also experience the daily life of the island while developing their projects.
The creation of the Inujima Life Garden, an ecological garden near the village, where a glass greenhouse was restored and an outdoor café was built, also played an essential role in helping residents adapt to this new routine. Residents regularly attend workshops and classes here to learn about growing fruit and vegetables.
Setbacks have acted as an incentive to redesign and rethink all the relationships present on the island. We Brazilians have also seen great changes in our neighborhoods, cities, and regions. We have admirable cases in our own country, and we can draw parallels with—and be inspired by—this snapshot of the project presented in the exhibition, especially as it relates to the collective use of space and the creation of inclusive centers that elude the gentrification that is common in so many cases.
Inujima is a little jewel in the Seto Inland Sea whose recent transformation is the result of one of the noblest of causes: human cooperation. It has resisted change. It remains relevant, creative, and soulful in two times: the past and the present.

Shrine and F-Art House
Located in front of the rocky mountain that houses a small shrine honoring the deity that dwells there, the existing residence of the site was moved to the central part of the plot. The dismantling of the house in the relocation process revealed that it had been built with a combination of new and old materials. The new plan maintains the same logic: the existing structure was kept and only the worn-out parts were replaced with new materials.

Ryue Nishizawa Architecture Firm
Stay 02 is an elevated house with a pitched roof, built with wood, and with an area of about 10 m2. It is a shared space for interaction of visitors and residents, designed in the garden of a traditional house. Because of the large windows and straw blinds (sudare), it creates a free and open space with flexible boundaries. Therefore, visitors can fully experience the landscape and daily life of Inujima. The aim was to create an architecture that becomes part of the island’s landscape.

T-HOUSE
Ichio Matsuzawa Architecture Firm
This empty house, located at the corner of the old shopping district, was once a shop called Kadoya that carried basic products for everyday life. It was a meeting place and still bears many memories. However, the roof had caved in, the walls were crumbling, and the structure was at danger of collapsing completely. Keeping the building on this corner was important, so there was a preference for renovation rather than demolition of this site. The careful tearing down of the deteriorated structures and walls gave way to the creation of a recreational space where people could casually gather. Behind the demolished wall there was a beautiful garden, and to preserve the landscape, no new walls were built on the site. Thus, the flower mural on the inside of the house connects with the garden on the outside.
